I often get asked how a mother of two from Winnipeg, Manitoba got into the business of making custom guitar picks, so I thought it would be a great idea to share my story here.
For my entire parental life, I have been very fortunate to be able to stay home and raise my two wonderful kids throughout their childhood, and it has been – by far – the most rewarding ‘job’ that I have ever had! As the kids grew up, they both took an interest in music. Tanner took up the drums, and over the years it has become his passion and his main interest for his future. Carly’s instrument of choice was the guitar!
Around the time that Carly began playing the guitar, she and I found a hobby in collecting guitar picks. By late 2007, our collection included picks from bands, businesses and artists from around the world, and it got me to thinking that it would be SO cool if I could get her some of her own custom picks as a Christmas gift. This was something that I thought would be fairly simple to find on the internet. Turned out I was right … It WAS easy to find the big custom guitar pick makers, but to order through them, not only would I have to purchase a MINIMUM of 144 picks … it turns out that they would all have to be the same color and the same design! Now, considering that Carly was only 8 years old at the time, I thought that was not the most exciting, nor the most economical solution to this Christmas gift idea!
It would have been the perfect gift! But everywhere I turned, I found the same thing…large minimum orders, and very limited design options. After days of searching, I questioned whether or not I could POSSIBLY be the only one looking for a small quantity of custom guitar picks! Frustrated and disappointed (yet somehow inspired), I began the process of starting up EGOpicks that very same day, with my husband and my kids behind me 100%!
Within a year of opening EGOpicks on eBay, I had surprisingly filled over 600 orders for various people, bands and businesses from all over the world. I definitely had the answer to my question … EGOpicks was something that many people were waiting for! It was an awesome feeling!
Now with EGOpicks well under way, I have been able to move out of the eBay forum, and into the ‘creative freedoms’ of having my own independent website thanks to my talented niece Heather, who created this amazing website and taught me the fine art of ‘maintaining’ it.
I continue to wake up each day thankful for each and every person that I’ve already had the pleasure of making custom guitar picks for, and I always look forward to ‘meeting’ those that I will make picks for in the future! Although I don’t pretend to have the fancy computerized equipment and resources that the major pick makers of the world do, I do pride myself on giving the BEST personal service to each and every customer, and the highest quality product that a ‘one-woman show’ can possibly provide!
My mission is simple … making high-quality, customized guitar picks available and affordable to not only established musicians, but to every guitar player regardless of age, gender and skill level. Every guitar player deserves to play guitar with a pick that is uniquely their own!
